Gas refrigerators never became as popular as electric refrigerators for several reasons, including the gas refrigerators use of dangerous chemicals, but the major reason was they didn't have the money to advertise as much as manufacturers of electric refrigerators. This ad is from a 1955 Life magazine, it was only a partial page ad, nothing like the multi-page electric refrigerators ads of the time.
On the top of gas refrigerators, toward the back, there is a louver assembly that should be cleaned at least twice a year, because dust accumulates rather heavily there and cuts down the circulation of air. You can clean the louver with your vacuum cleaner dust brush or with a damp cloth, but it is best to unscrew it and lift it out for a thorough cleaning.
